Psssst: Time to Clean Your Cellphone!

One of the things we’ve learned over the past year while coping with a viral pandemic is that keeping our environment and possessions cleaner pays off in better health. So, we at SERVPRO recommend that you continue basic hygiene measures such as washing your hands frequently. And we strongly recommend that—pandemic or no—you regularly clean your cellphone. Because that essential little device goes with you just about everywhere. You touch it, then touch something else, then touch it, then ... you get the idea.

To be blunt, your cellphone is loaded with germs. And to be specific, a recent study done by the University of Arizona revealed that cellphones are covered with ten times more bacteria than a toilet seat!

Think Before You Touch Your Phone

Pay attention to what you touch before and after you use your phone. A gas pump? Your lunch? What else? Anyway, try to wash your hands with soap and water before you pick up your cell phone, or at least clean up with hand sanitizer.

  • When eating: try not to use your phone while eating. Wash with soap and water when done
  • On the road: when running errands, use wipes or hand sanitizer before using your phone
  • In the bathroom: your “go zone” should be a cell phone “no-go zone”

Develop a Phone-Cleaning Routine

Because you touch your cellphone throughout the day, you should follow the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is to clean all high-touch surfaces in your home and at work regularly.

Start by wiping your cellphone with a soft, dry cloth when you return home. Then, two to three times a week, thoroughly disinfect the phone.

  • Avoid bleach, bathroom cleaners or other abrasive cleansers. Instead, use disinfecting wipes and soft dry cloths
  • Remove the phone from its case, then wipe the phone and case with the dry cloth
  • Using disinfecting wipes, clean the case and phone, including ports and buttons, being careful not to drench the surface
  • Air-dry for five minutes, then finish by wiping the phone and case dry with a new soft cloth

How We Clean Porous and Non-Porous Surfaces

Cleaning—using a detergent and water to physically remove germs, dirt and impurities from surfaces and objects—does not necessarily kill all germs on porous and non-porous surfaces, but by reducing their numbers, you can greatly reduce the risk of spreading infection.

Some materials cannot be cleaned with detergent and water without being damaged. For this reason, paper and paper products cannot be cleaned or disinfected.

Porous materials that are not water-sensitive, like carpet, area rugs, upholstered items and draperies, are wet-cleaned using a hot water extraction or preconditioner and rinse method. Cleaning methods typically used on water-sensitive materials, such as vacuuming or dry sponging, do not remove enough soil and residue to be effective.

We effectively wet-clean non-porous materials, like hard-surface floors, cabinets, countertops, doorknobs and plumbing fixtures, using a variety of SERVPRO hard-surface cleaners (general purpose) and cleaning methods.

How We Disinfect Non-Porous Surfaces

It is important to understand that not all porous surfaces can be disinfected, such as carpet, area rugs, upholstered items and draperies.

We use hospital-grade chemicals to kill germs and disinfect non-porous surfaces or objects, like hard-surface floors, cabinets, countertops, doorknobs and plumbing fixtures. SERVPRO follows CDC recommendations that advise using a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant.

We apply these disinfectants using a spray bottle, pump-up sprayer, electric sprayer or mister. Once thoroughly sprayed, we allow the disinfectant to remain on the surface for ten minutes, sufficient to kill germs.

We follow the CDC’s recommendations to use disinfecting wipes on electronic items that are touched often, such as phones and computers. If necessary, we use more than one wipe to keep the surface wet for the recommended length of contact time.

We Focus on Safety

A group of warning and safety signs. These latest safety initiatives at SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield help keep our workers ready to respond to your disaster.

Here at SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield, we place a premium on the safety of our workers. Earlier this year, we hired a new safety coordinator, Rhonda, who came to us with more than twenty years of experience in construction and warehouse management.

Rhonda says she “likes to learn new things and do different things”—and she’s certainly accomplishing that at SERVPRO! Here are just some of the initiatives she and SERVPRO have been working on in recent months.

Enhanced Training

Training programs and training videos are now available in both English and Spanish. We’ve reinforced our employees’ safety awareness by implemented new training in:

  • How to wear a respirator mask. Workers learn to test if the mask is the right size, fits correctly to the face, is tightly sealed and allows adequate breathing.
  • Safe processing and disposal of blood-borne pathogens.
  • Correct use of fire extinguishers and generators.
  • Using a third plug adapter to prevent fires. Each piece of equipment and all trucks are equipped with a third plug adapter, so that our grounded equipment can be used safely even in older homes that lack the third grounding prong.
  • Cleaning service products. All our chemical products are documented in a binder that explains appropriate uses, how to use and what protective equipment is required. This not only keeps our workers up to date on products, it allows them to share this information on the spot with our customers.
  • Proper operation of forklifts.
  • How to properly lift heavy loads and how to use shoulder dolly straps.

Consistent Procedures

Once a month, the safety coordinator meets with crew chiefs to determine what additional safety measures are needed. Among the new procedures making every day at SERVPRO even safer are:

  • Every truck that leaves the SERVPRO lot is fully equipped and inspected. Each crew and crew chief are provided with duffel bags containing hard hats, goggles, safety vest, shoulder dolly straps for heavy loads and the chemical information binder. Trucks are inspected each day and are consistently assigned to a specific crew to increase safe and responsible operation. Each truck is equipped with a first aid kit, an eyewash station and a fire extinguisher.
  • Each crew is provided with a blood-borne pathogen duffel bag containing hazmat suits, thick gloves, tweezers, needle containers and sealable bags for safe waste disposal. We have contracted with a respected vendor to locate metal storage containers in our parking lot, in which bagged blood-borne waste is stored and picked up for final disposal.
  • Fire extinguishers are inspected and dated each month to assure they are in peak condition.
  • Forklifts are inspected each day.

These new initiatives build on our already substantial safety program to make sure our crews are safe, healthy and ready to respond to your disaster!

If you’ve experienced disrupting damage from a fire, smoke, water, sewage or storm disaster, nothing is more important than restoring your home and possessions “Like it never even happened.”

That’s why SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield upgraded its inventory system earlier this year to ensure that your furniture and personal possessions are securely tracked while we clean and store them and repair your home. The heart of our process is a computer-based tracking system that shows at a glance exactly where your items are and what work has been performed.

Caring for 100% of Your Items

SERVPRO will take care of 100% of the items in your home, either cleaning or storing them. The process starts at your home, where our project manager determines what work needs to be done to restore each item. Everything is individually labeled with your name, QR-coded and photographed. Next, the objects are securely wrapped: furniture in blankets then plastic wrap, glass in bubble wrap then plastic wrap, etc. Smaller personal items are boxed, photographed and then packed and labeled.

You witness the entire process and at the end, sign off on a form that lists all the items with the before-wrap photos. (This list also provides essential information for your insurance claim.)

Once wrapped, your possessions are loaded into storage containers or vaults; the container, too, is labeled and QR-coded. With a scan, SERVPRO staff can immediately tell where an item is in its facility, and if the item needs cleaning, is being or has been cleaned (and when) or is waiting in a secure storage container. Certain items, like smoke-damaged clothing, or unique possessions, like pianos or pool tables, are entrusted to specialty cleaners that SERVPRO contracts with.

An Unbroken Chain of Custody

At our facility in Bloomfield Connecticut (built in 2015 and one of the largest SERVPRO warehouses in the U.S.), we have multiple rooms dedicated to storage. When a homeowner needs to retrieve items early—documents required for insurance claims or the contents of a room that’s ready to be set up, for example—we quickly locate the items in our system and determine exactly where they are stored.

West Hartford, Connecticut Sewage Backup

“This isn’t my favorite project to talk about. The smell was awful. The scene felt overwhelming when we arrived to find about ten houses surrounded by raw sewage from a pipe that clogged up and then backed up.  Many neighbors had sewage several inches deep in their basements. The SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield crew was on the scene pumping out the basements, removing damaged property, and cleaning up what we could restore. It was a big job, but with our contacts we can call in as much equipment and manpower as needed. We got it all done and the homeowners were so appreciative."

Dozens Homeless After Hartford Fire
“This job was amazing. It happened a few months ago when dozens of people lost their homes in a fire. The fire blazed through two separate multi-family buildings in Hartford, Connecticut. After we got clearance from the fire departments, we were quickly on the scene."

“The SERVPRO crew I was on spent the whole night and into the next day securing the property and personal belongings from the fire and water wreckage. That was like 36 straight hours of work. Enjoy Your Holidays

Holiday Ornaments Especially at this time of year, we believe in giving thanks and spreading joy. Our office Christmas decorations help with that.

At SERVPRO we work hard and we celebrate hard. We believe the best companies do their work well but also know how to appreciate life and the holidays with the most important asset in any company-- employees.

This year at SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield our employees challenged each other to see who could create the best Christmas wonderland in their office space. Most of us went wild with holiday decoration fun.

One employee's office features a snow pathway to his desk, Christmas presents, stuffed animals, and a colorful "JOY" sign.

Another employee wears her Santa hat, hung Christmas stockings, put down a glittering snow path way to her desk, and placed some of the most popular children's movie characters around her space. The Minions and Winnie the Pooh are bringing smiles to the office staff.

A third employee has made his brown desk look like the edges are dripping with frosting. At first glance some of us thought that desk was a gingerbread or cupcake desk, but we did not bite. A huge red bow dominates his main office wall. A row of bright poinsettia plants gives the office an outdoor feel.

Then there's the employee with many gold and silver stars twirling from her office ceiling. Over her desk is a snowy archway crowned with a bow. She's got Santa figurines and a snow globe. But in this office the favorite decoration by far is a huge box of candy canes. I wonder why.

A team of employees has taken a different approach. Their space is long and narrow with limited light (they need to limit the light for the screen work they do). Walk into their space and you're greeted with a ceiling and walls aglow with a few hundred colored Christmas lights. All the lights lead your eye to end of the space where you see a good-size fully decorated and lit Christmas tree.

Another well decorated area appears at the top of this post.

We think of this season as a time of thanksgiving and joy. In Bloomfield we have a lot to be thankful for and joyful about. Our staff consists of talented, dedicated, fun-to-work with people. Our clients are terrific. And business is growing strong.

SERVPRO To The Rescue

Calvary to the Rescue At SERVPRO it can feel like we're in the Cavalry coming to the rescue

One of the great things about working for SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield is that we often get to do amazing work. Nothing feels better than helping a homeowner overcome damage from a roof collapse or major fire or mold infestation or water damage. At times it feels like we’re the Cavalry coming to the rescue.

Here are two recent examples.  

Burst Pipe Floods A Nonprofit’s 75,000 Square Foot Headquarters
Water flooded a 75,000 square foot Connecticut nonprofit agency in 2018 when a sprinkler pipe burst. The agency’s ability to serve their many clients and keep their employees safe were greatly compromised. SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield performed emergency water extraction of several inches of water. Then we completely dried the 75,000 square foot area with industrial dryers. We tested for mold and mildew. Our crew removed and replaced all damaged building materials.

During the work we discovered and removed hazardous asbestos and applied an anti-microbial spray. Because of our work the nonprofit was back serving clients within days. The building was safer and in better shape after we left than before the pipe break occurred.

Saving $30,000 For Bloomfield Homeowner
Also, in 2018, a Bloomfield, Connecticut homeowner suffered a major water loss behind expensive kitchen cabinets. Most cleanup and restoration crews would have done the easy, standard fix. They would just cut through the cabinets to fix the plumbing. But we don’t do just standard work without investigating to see if there’s a better solution.

SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield chose to save the cabinets by cutting through the pipes below the cabinets. Making this creative decision made the pipe repair work a tad more expensive ($800) but it saved the kitchen cabinets that the homeowner had paid $30,000 for. You should have seen the smile of relief on that homeowner’s face.
