Keep Water Out of Your Suffield Basement

11/11/2021 (Permalink)

Water in a basement Following these tips from SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield can help prevent water from entering your Suffield basement.

When your basement floods, it can cost you time and money—and may ruin appliances, furnishings and personal belongings that you have stored there. Sometimes the flood is from a sudden intense storm, a burst pipe or an appliance leak, but often the water enters more slowly and frequently, leaving you with ongoing damage to your Suffield home.

Prevent Water from Entering Your Basement

A common cause of water in basements in north central Connecticut is from foundation leaks. If you have a perimeter drainage system that isn’t keeping the water out, you’ll want to hire a professional waterproofing firm to correct or upgrade your system.

But often, the fix is much easier and faster—and something you can do yourself. Typically, you want to home in on the features of your house and yard that direct water away from your foundation.

Check your gutters. Your house’s drainage system includes your gutters and downspouts. Gutters can get clogged with leaves and debris, so make sure they are cleaned out; some homeowners have to do this a couple of times a year if trees surround the home.

Next, check your cleaned-out gutters after a heavy rainfall. If water overflows along the run of a gutter, it may need to be adjusted to the appropriate angle to direct water to the downspout.

Your downspouts should extend far enough to prevent water from pooling near your foundation. If not, purchase extenders to carry the water ten feet or more away from your home.

Check your slope. The ground surrounding your home should slope away from the foundation on all sides to carry water away from your foundation. You can fill in small depressions or swales with clay-based soil, but if there are large soggy areas or your home is surrounded by hills that drain water toward it, you’ll need to hire a civil engineer to regrade your property.
