Is Smart Fire Detection Technology Right for Your Home?

1/21/2021 (Permalink)

A smoke detector mounted on a ceiling Adding smart technology to your home's system of smoke detectors can give you even more protection from housefires.

Many of us are incorporating smart technology and devices into our homes: smart speakers, appliances, doorbells, lightbulbs and more. In addition to making your everyday life easier, smart home tech might actually be a lifesaver.

New devices and technologies are being developed all the time, but right now, you can install several fire prevention and detection devices that can stop a fire or minimize fire damage in your home. (Many homeowners can confidently install these devices themselves; if that’s not you, hire an electrician to do the installation and testing for you.)

Smart Smoke Detectors

Connected to an app on your smartphone, these devices can send a notification that smoke has been detected at your home, allowing you to alert authorities immediately from anywhere. Some smart detectors can be wired into a home security system, which can automatically contact your fire department. Other capabilities may include:

  • Turning on lights and offering verbal directions to help your family escape a fire
  • Turning off your HVAC system to reduce spread of smoke
  • Allowing a camera to be set up to record a fire event, providing evidence for your insurance claim

And, while this feature is not in the “lifesaving” category, many smart smoke detectors can send an alert to a smartphone if its battery level is getting low. That’s right: no more 3:00 a.m. chirping, no more hunting for the guilty detector and a chair to climb on, no more ripping the device off the wall and yanking the battery out, no more stumbling back to bed cursing.

Smart Batteries

Instead of buying a smart smoke detector, you can install smart batteries in your existing detectors. These will also send alarm and low-battery notifications to your smartphone.

Smart Heat/Fire Detectors

A smart heat detector does not replace a smoke detector, but because it uses a different way to detect a fire, it can be a good complement to your existing detectors, especially if you get a lot of false alarms.

Smart Kitchen Fire Prevention

The number one cause of home fires is cooking fires, and most of those start when someone leaves the kitchen while the stovetop is in use. A smart sensor uses motion sensing technology to shut off the stovetop if no one is in the kitchen for a specified period of time. It then detects when you return to the kitchen and restarts cooking.
