Ride Out a Thunderstorm Safely—At Home

Lightning Strike When thunder rumbles, get inside fast! Once inside, follow these tips to be even safer in a storm.

Summer is peak season for thunderstorms and lightning. If you’re outside and hear thunder, immediately stop all outdoor activities and go inside a building or hard-topped vehicle.

You're safest inside during a thunderstorm, but there are ways to be even safer in your home:

  • Unplug televisions, computers and any other high-value electronics before the storm hits.
  • Don’t touch electrical equipment or cords, including corded phones (using cell or cordless phones is safe).
  • Stay away from windows, doors and porches.
  • Don’t take baths or showers—water conducts electricity.

If you think your home has been struck by lightning:

  • Call 911 immediately. If you see fire or smoke, leave the house. Ask your fire department to check for hot spots in your walls.
  • If you use gas for heating and cooking, contact your gas company or a licensed contractor to test for leaks before re-entering your home to be sure no gas system components were punctured by direct or nearby lightning strikes.
