Be Prepared for a Big Storm

Aerial view of a flooded neighborhood When a big storm is heading your way, use the time to prepare your property and plan to evacuate, if you need to.

Here comes hurricane season! A hurricane or other major storm can threaten your life and destroy or severely damage your home and property. You can’t stop the storm, but you can be prepared.

  • Tune into your local TV or radio station and community alert system for emergency information.
  • Check your emergency survival kit, which should be stocked with essential items.
  • Fully charge your car chargers for your cell phone, smart phone and other portable devices.
  • Secure all outdoor furniture and other objects or move them inside. 
  • Collect tools and emergency building materials, such as plywood, sandbags and waterproof tarps.
  • Fuel up your vehicles and equipment. If you have an emergency generator, store fresh fuel in an approved container in a safe location.
  • Know how to shut off the gas, electricity and water in your home or place of business. If you need to evacuate, turn off utilities before leaving.
  • Tell someone outside the affected area where you are and, if evacuating, where you will be.
